The Meridian Arts Ensemble will celebrate the release of its Timbrando CD with a special concert at the Manhattan School of Music, Friday, September 12th, 7:30 p.m. Timbrando (Portuguese for making a tone or sounding, related to the word timbre) is a cross cultural travelogue of music the group collected while on tour in Latin and South America and the U.S. The concert is a performance of the pieces on Timbrando including: the traditional Caballito Nicollano, (The Cowboy from Nicolla), Silvestre Revueltas Ocho por Radio, Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzollas Oblivion, (a popular Argentine ballad), Heitor Villa Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras Nos. 1 (Prelude) and 5 (Aria)," fusing Brazilian sounds with Bach-like counterpoint, and jazz percussionist/composer Dafnis Prietos Echo Dimensions. Additional pieces include those commissioned for the Meridian Arts Ensembles performance at the 1997 Subtropics Festival in Miami: Timbrando by Hermeto Pascoal, En par de los levantes de la aurora by Ana Lara and Sako by Tania Leon.

The Manhattan School of Music is located at 120 Claremont Avenue in New York. For tickets and information contact: (212) 749-2802. The Meridian Arts Ensemble is an Ensemble in Residence at the Manhattan School of Music.

Timbrando and the Meridian Arts Ensemble were recently featured on NPR's All Things Considered.

Timbrando is released in the year of the Meridian Arts Ensembles 20th anniversary. The group began as a traditional brass quintet winning four competitions within four years including First Prize in the 1990 Concert Artists Guild New York Competition that launched their career. Eclecticism is a key element of MAEs performances: mixing classical and contemporary works, jazz and rock compositions, ethnic music and original works by Ensemble members. They are well known for their interpretations of rock composer Frank Zappas work (who personally coached them on how to play his music) as well as commissioning, collaborating or premiering works by Milton Babbitt, The Common Sense Composers Collective, Stephen Barber, Ira Taxin, Kirk Nurock, John Halle, among several others.
