Wynton Marsalis hardly needs an introduction. One of the most brilliant jazz trumpeters of our time, he's also an accomplished classical musician, composer and jazz historian.

Before he won nine Grammy Awards, before he became the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize in music for his epic oratorio “Blood on the Fields," and before he established Jazz at Lincoln Center, Marsalis was born to a New Orleans music teacher, the second of six sons. He received his first trumpet at age 6 from legend Al Hirt.

Marsalis, 46, performs with his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on Sunday at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, downtown.

In 2006, Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center mounted The Higher Ground Hurricane Relief concert, which raised $3 million. This year, between concerts, Marsalis is promoting his new book, “Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life" (Random House: $26), written with Geoffrey Ward, a candid look at his own life's lessons learned from jazz.

In the book, he notes “jazz music is America's past and its potential." Does he think jazz in America is endangered?

“People have been saying that for years," Marsalis said in a recent interview. “I remember when the cover of Time magazine, about 20 years ago, read 'Jazz Is Dead.'

“Jazz certainly isn't endangered where I've been, and I've traveled all over the world playing this music for over 25 years. We built Frederick P. Rose Hall, a performance space dedicated to jazz, in the heart of New York City. We've kept the doors open. On any given night, walk into Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola (in New York) and it'll be swinging."
