Jazz Presents Series: Alumni from the First 20 Years

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance Space
55 West 13th Street, 5th floor
Admission $10; free for seniors, students and all members of the New School community

On his critically acclaimed new double CD, Twi-Life (Strick Muzik), the talented saxophonist/composer Marcus Strickland (New School Jazz alumnus '01) serves up two distinct styles: one exhibits his material in a quintessential jazz quartet; the other offers electric variations of standards in adventurous, laid-back grooves.

Tonight's performance showcases this eclectic electric side, with Marcus and his equally dynamic twin brother E.J. Strickland (New School Jazz alumnus '02) stepping onto the New School stage together for the first time since 2001. Guitarist Lage Lund and electric bassist Carlos Henderson join in this performance of highly celebrated jazz blends.

This fall, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music celebrates its 20th anniversary with a range of exciting concerts and special events, including a special anniversary season of its popular Jazz Presents series, showcasing some of the school's most prestigious alumni from the past 20 years, including Marcus Strickland (Sept. 21), Virginia Mayhew (Oct. 12), and John Ellis (Oct. 26). The school will also inaugurate its third season of Monday Nights at Sweet Rhythm, its concert series at New York's premier jazz club, features students, alumni, and special guest artists. Jazz Presents is funded in part by a grant from The New York State Council on the Arts.
