The Friday Evening concert series at the National Portrait Gallery of London is one of the most established and long-running series in the UK and on March 6th the Luca Luciano Duo amazed the audience with an outstanding performance of improvised music.

Luca Luciano specialises in small ensembles and performs in duo with piano featuring Mark Donlon and presenting a programme completely different from what is generally proposed by other jazz ensembles. The performance presents new and challenging music, unique and varied, embracing romantic atmospheres and contemporary idioms, experimentation and heartfelt melodies. Though Lucas exceptional virtuoso skills are clearly evident, the music has always a distinctive melodic sense influenced by the European tradition and his Neapolitan heritage. Due to its variety and melodic taste, the repertoire has proven to be appreciated by a wide range of music lovers who are also after something different and stimulating.

Along with a couple of re-arrangements of jazz classics by Monk or Churchill, the duo presented original material published in the album Neapolis or unpublished compositions to be recorded soon. Particular appreciation was given to Lucas jazz Sonatas where the complexity of the writings, the typical romantic/early 20th century harmonic approach and melodic taste come forward.

“Luca is very appreciated in the UK and overseas having developed an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso via recordings and concert halls appearances ("Masterful Clarinet" by Musician Magazine) and Mark Donlon is Senior Lecturer Jazz and the Leeds College of Music and very respected in the UK for his involvement with Cuban music and arrangements for a contemporary big band featuring Kenny Wheeler. They started collaborating three years ago when they met at the Leeds College where Luca lecturers both jazz and classical clarinet.
