New York vocalist and educator Louise Rogers pulls off an enchanting performance on her fourth album “Come Ready and See Me," containing a couple of originals and a selection of uncommon standards. A jazz educator and performer in the New York jazz scene, Rogers distinguishes herself as a singer with a warm approach to the music.

While the vocalist is the main feature here, she does surround herself with a fine cast of musicians providing excellent instrumental support on various tracks. Joining the singer is husband, bassist Rick Strong on all but one track, Mathew Fries (piano on 3,4,6,7), Mathias Kunzli (drums), Paul Meyers (guitar 2, 5) and Gottfried Stoger (Sax 3,6,8).

The standout tunes on this disc begin with Jerry Bergonzi's “Conjunction," where Rogers's soft vocals give way to pianist Fries and saxophonist Stoger who provide sturdy solos in between the singers verses. The Rogers original, “Shadow of Yesterday" where she shares the lead with guitarist Meyers in a beautiful soft number.

Oscar Hammerstein & Jerome Kern would be pleased this rendition of their classic, “The Song Is You," complete with appreciable scatting from Rogers. Saxophonist Stoger's “Poetic Song" provides the best instrumentals featuring the sax man on a delicious sax phrasing.

The program rounds out with Richard Whiting's “Louise," and the religious melancholy finale of “Lass from the Low Countree." “Come Ready and See Me," is collection of gentle light jazz sung with emotion and grace by one of the finest jazz vocalist on the jazz scene today. This is an album that will generally appeal to one's softer side.
