ASHEVILLE, N.C. (October 2003) The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa is famous for attracting world-class entertainment for its renowned All That Jazz Weekend, and the 2004 edition is no different. Grammy Award winner Lou Rawls is the headliner for the 12th All That Jazz Weekend, January 30-February 1, 2004. Kicking off the weekend is one of the legendary fathers of jazz, Ellis Marsalis and his quartet.
Rawls distinctive voice is as recognizable as any in the music industry. In his more than 40 years as a recording artist, spanning an astonishing 75 plus albums, three Grammy awards, 13 Grammy nominations, one platinum album, five gold albums and a gold single, Rawls has epitomized the ultimate song stylist. I've gone the full spectrum--from gospel to blues to jazz to soul to pop, said Rawls. The public has accepted what I've done through it all. I think it means I've been doing something right at the right time."
When the subject of jazz comes up these days, the name Marsalis is soon sure to follow. Brothers Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason have all reached international fame. But before they found success, their father Ellis was shaping his own career as a jazz pianist and composer and has become New Orleans leading jazz educator.
