Lots of Jazz Coming to Bumbershoot in Seattle

Jazz unfortunately continues to be a low priority at Bumbershoot, with no big name acts in this year's lineup.

On the upside, a beloved local jazz educator and a jazz nonprofit and its director will be honored at Bumbershoot at today's Mayor's Arts Awards ceremony -- and the three-day spree does continue to present good regional jazz. Excellent national soul, blues and world-music groups, and a peek at a cool new blues fiction film, are on the menu, as well.

Jazz -- Northwest Court

Local record company Origin is back at it again, booking creative jazz groups on the Northwest Court stage Sunday, a pleasant place to quaff a beer and soak up the sounds. Guitarist Dave Peterson and bassist Chuck Deardorf provide a flowing, open-ended, often blues-inflected blend (at noon); pianist Victor Noriega, who sometimes uses Filipino folk songs as source material, adds the saxophones of Mark Taylor and Stuart MacDonald to his trio (1:30 p.m.); Portland pianist Darrell Grant (3 p.m.) and Seattle's favorite jazz singer Greta Matassa (4:30 p.m.) present material from new CD releases; and New Yorker Sam Yahel, best known for his work with Josh Redman, plays organ with Seattleites Taylor and drummer Matt Jorgensen (6 p.m.).
