The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass. will present Evidence: A Jazz Creation, a multi-layered live performance featuring trumpet virtuoso Lew Soloff, bassist Francois Moutin, and vocalist and cellist Anne Sila, in collaboration with LA-based dancer and choreographer Courtney Giannone, on Monday, September 26 at 7:30pm.
Hailed for his tremendous range and superior technical command, Soloff has performed with a remarkable array of talent, including mentors Gil Evans and Machito, Joe Henderson, Maynard Ferguson, Mel Lewis, Thad Jones, Clark Terry, Tito Puente, Ornette Coleman, and Carla Bley, among numerous others. As a member of the groundbreaking jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears from 1968-1973, his trumpet solos became an indelible part of American culture. He currently works with the Manhattan Jazz Quintet, of which he is a founding member, the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, the contemporary quintet Manhattan Brass, and his own quartet, among others.
Together with François Moutin and Anne Sila, Soloff has formed a new ensemble, Evidence. Paris native Moutin was recognized as one of the finest bass players in Europe when he moved to New York City in 1997. There, he has worked with premier artists on the jazz scene. Moutin has toured throughout Europe and the United States with the Moutin Reunion Quartet, which has been called “one of the best working bands in jazz history" and is a member of the Lew Soloff Quartet, an all-star unit that includes Lew Soloff (trumpet), Jean-Michel Pilc (piano) and Billy Hart (drums). Anne Sila, whom Moutin met while giving a master class in southern France, is a brilliant new talent. This 21-year-old channels the best scat singing stars to thrill new audiences of 21st century jazz.
Evidence: A Jazz Creation will feature exquisite improvisations on jazz standards and new tunes. Adding to the evening's spontaneous spirit, the musicians will jam to a filmed dance piece (Spools) created by and featuring Courtney Giannone. Giannone will bring yet another layer of inventiveness when she takes the stage for a live dance performance, improvising to Evidence's music.
