A third generation white South African, Syd Kitchen is lauded in his home country as a musical figure of Dylan-esque proportions. A prominent fixture on the music scene since the 1970s, Syd's songs tell the story of his homeland as they seamlessly intertwine ancestral African rhythms with the harmonies of contemporary Jazz and Folk, creating an unforgetable musical journey with a global impact. It has been said of him: “When the full story of South African music is told, the name Syd Kitchen will appear right at the top with the best of the country's home-grown musicians. Not only is he an incredibly talented musician, but he is also one of the country's best-known musical personalities."

Fulfilling a long held desire to bring his music to America, SYD KITCHEN will be in New York from July 8 - 27 to perform a series of intimate club concerts as well as an in-studio live performance on WNYC's Soundcheck with John Schaffer.

“Syd Kitchen is to South African music what the Sphynx is to Egypt; a landmark that has seemingly always existed, yet remains a true enigma." ~ Brooklyn Vegan

This visit also marks the release of his highly anticipated new album Fool in a Bubble. Fool was recorded in New York with producer Keith Lentin (Keith Richards Band, Blondie Chaplin) and features many of the acclaimed musicians from Paul Simon's landmark album Graceland. Mixing influences both new and old, African and Western, these seven tracks represent the culmination of a musical journey of more than 40 years that will undoubtedly satisfy Syd's most devoted followers as well as assuring a new audience of fans. A release event is scheduled for July 24th at Joe's Pub and will feature Syd performing new material with an all-star band.

“Fool in a Bubble" is also the name of a documentary film about Syd which will wrap up shooting during his US visit. Directed by New York based film producer Josh Sternlicht, the documentary will feature archival material dating back to Syd's early career through present day, exploring Syd's words, music, struggles and aspirations in the context of his homeland.

“The Durban-based artist's often biting lyrics and crafty guitar work have earned him a dedicated following at festivals and clubs throughout the world." ~ GothamJazz.com
