Latin Vocal Workshops with Sofia Rei Koutsovitis, Presented by New York Jazz Academy, Now Registering

New York Jazz Academy, the fastest growing music school in New York City, is pleased to announce a new workshop offering for vocalists. Latin American Vocal Workshop, with instructor Sofia Rei Koutsovitis, is open to singers that wish to learn more about Latin American repertoire. The sessions will focus on the music and rhythms of Brazil, Cuba, Argentina and Peru. Learn how to sing in Spanish and Portuguese while developing your performance skills and your vocal technique. Expand your vision of our own voice and its infinite possibilities. Participants will work on individual song interpretation, collective singing, rhythm and sound exploration and vocal improvisation. This is a weekly summer workshop that will meet for one hour and a half in each session. Open to vocalists of all levels.

Tuition: $240
Dates: Saturdays, July 10-August 28 (8 weeks)
Time: 2pm-3:30pm.
Location: 44 Downing Street, New York, NY 10014 (West Village) Walk-ins welcome. $40 cash at the door. Call ahead to reserve a walk-in space.

About the instructor

Sofia Rei Koutsovitis a truly passionate and restless artist, is one of the most versatile and in-demand singers on the New York music scene. She has recorded, performed and collaborated with renowned musicians and groups such as Maria Schneider, John Zorn, Bobby McFerrin, Folklore Urbano, John Scofield, Lionel Loueke, Pavel Urkiza (Gema y Pavel), Russ Ferrante (Yellow Jackets), Bob Moses, Aquiles Baez, Samuel Torres Group, Pedrito Martinez, and Avantango. She is also the vocalist of Geoffrey Keezer's Aurea, whose self- titled 2009 release received a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, her project is grounded in traditional South American rhythms such as chacarera, zamba and vidala from Argentina, Afro-peruvian festejo and lando, Afro-Uruguayan candombe, Colombian cumbia and bullerengue and other genres that merge involving jazz harmonies, electronic sounds and rich improvisations. Singing in Spanish, Portuguese or English, Sofia's voice is so graceful as sophisticated, tying together diverse influences in a program full of rhythmic complexity, melody and romance.
