International jazz trumpeter Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets to perform Sunday, August 14 at 7 p.m. at Laff House Comedy Club located at 221 South St.
Laff House Comedy Club features live jazz on the first Sunday of every month in the Jazz on South Street series. Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets will be performing on the second Sunday of August as a special feature.
The Jazz on South series is a way to bring local, regional and international jazz artists to the Philadelphia area," said Steve Baylock, music director of Jazz on South Street. I try to bring in groups that have their own sound and have produced original material that is still reflective of jazz in its purest form, and I thought Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets fit that model perfectly."
Derrick Gardner has toured internationally with The Count Basie Orchestra, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Roman Schwaller's European Sextet. The last time I played in Philadelphia was in 2010 at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz," said Derrick Gardner, jazz trumpeter and leader of the The Jazz Prophets. Since then I have performed in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan, South Africa and Thailand."
Laff House Comedy Club is located in the South Street Headhouse District, an area known for its diverse selection of diners, shops and entertainment venues.
Jazz has a strong history in Philadelphia that has become a part of Philly culture," said Gardner. I really enjoy the vibe that the Philadelphia audience brings to performances, and I am really looking forward to playing there."
The members of Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets include trumpeter Derrick Gardner, trombonist Vincent Gardner, pianist Anthony Wonsey, drummer Donald Edwards, saxophonist Rob Dixon and bassist Dezron Douglas.
