“...the heir to Thelonious Monk." - Entertainment Weekly

“Imagine pianist Billy Preston in the FBI witness protection program; he hides out in the Washington, DC, go-go scene and then the jazz underground; he invents an unlikely pseudonym to go with his new style: a sort of twisted, funky, neo-juke-joint avant-gut-bucket."
- Detroit Metro Times

“...it's Gilchrist's cussed willingness to continually put a Baltimore-centric stamp on jazz that has made him the city's most respected pianist."
- Baltimore City Paper

“...I haven't heard anything like Lafayette Gilchrist & The New Volcanoes."
- Howard Mandel, Jazz Beyond Jazz

Brooklyn, NY - Lafayette Gilchrist is set to release Soul Progressin', his fourth album with Hyena Records on September 9. There's good reason why jazz fans and critics alike are so excited about the young Baltimore-based pianist. Gilchrist hit the scene hard with his 2004 debut, The Music According To Lafayette Gilchrist, and went straight to earning raves for his sophomore release, Towards The Shining Path. Coming off the building momentum of his 2007 trio recording Three, Gilchrist recently placed in the DownBeat Critics' Poll “Rising Star Piano" category, while his music was featured in HBO's hit series The Wire.

Emerging from jazz legend David Murray's Black Saint Quartet, a group in which he still plays to this day, Lafayette Gilchrist has an approach and presence that's drawn comparisons to royalty such as Andrew Hill and Sun Ra. With his own band The New Volcanoes, Gilchrist presents an octet that's equally inspired by DC go-go, old school soul, hard funk and progressive hip-hop. Introduced to Hyena Records by the iconic guitarist Vernon Reid, Gilchrist has established a reputation as one of the great new visionaries in modern jazz. Joined by The New Volcanoes, he will support the release of Soul Progressin' with a string of upcoming East Coast shows.

Lafayette Gilchrist dates are:
September 2 / Regattabar / Boston, MA
September 6 / Rosslyn Jazz Festival / Arlington, VA
September 12 / The Blue Note / New York, NY
September 13 / Creative Alliance @ The Patterson / Baltimore, MD

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
