“Very simply, this is jazz at its finest." --LA Times

“The greatest piano trio in contemporary jazz..." --BBC Music Magazine

Three pivotal proponents of the jazz standard movement, pianist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock celebrate their 25th Anniversary at the Kimmel Center's Verizon Hall on Friday, September 19, 2008 at 8pm. The trio's masterful improvisational skills have turned the spotlight on the Great American Songbook, redefining seminal works from the 1930's, 40's and 50's. The group recently released a special 3-CD box set, Setting Standards: The New York Sessions (2008), containing jazz standards and original works recorded in New York in 1983.

Allentown, Pa. native Keith Jarrett first began playing with drummer Jack DeJohnette in 1966 as members of the Charles Lloyd Quartet, followed by a one-year stint with Miles Davis in 1970; the trio officially formed in 1983 with bassist Gary Peacock.

“For some, the Great American Songbook has been tapped out; but for Jarrett, Peacock and DeJohnette, it's still a wellspring of inspiration and a source of spontaneous composition of the most collective kind."--All About Jazz

Keith Jarrett began playing piano at age three and has grown to become renowned for his masterful improvisations as well as his compositions for jazz groups, orchestra, soloist and chamber ensemble. Throughout the 1960's and 70's, Jarrett performed with many popular groups including Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, the Charles Lloyd Quartet and Miles Davis' electric fusion group, before dedicating himself to perform exclusively as a solo artist and as a leader. His discography, unparalleled in scope, diversity and quality, includes over 60 recordings with ECM Records. Jarrett's landmark solo piano recordings, such as the Kln Concert (1975), the best-selling piano recording in history, have helped redefine the role of the piano in contemporary music. Jarrett joined the ranks of Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and Elton John after he was awarded the 2003 Polar Music Prize by the King of Sweden. He has received eight Grammy nominations and numerous international awards, including the Leonie Sonning Prize in Copenhagen in 2004, one of the world's major music awards.

Chicago native Jack DeJohnette first played with Keith Jarrett from 1966-68 as a member of the Charles Lloyd Quartet, then for a year with the Miles Davis quartet. In addition to performing with Jarrett and Gary Peacock, recent touring projects include a new quartet with pianist Danilo Prez, bassist John Patitucci and guitarist Jerome Harris; a trio recording and tour with Bruce Hornsby and Christian McBride; plus trio tours with Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea, and with Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter. DeJohnette has the distinction of having been voted “Best Drummer" in Downbeat magazine's reader's polls for an unprecedented 13 straight years from 1980 to 1992, as well as several more times in recent years.

Jazz bassist Gary Peacock began his musical studies in his native Idaho before moving to Los Angeles and then New York to perform with such luminaries as Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Albert Ayler, Sonny Rollins and others. After studying Oriental philosophy and medicine in Japan, Peacock returned to the United States in the early 1970's. A teacher as well as a composer and a performer, Peacock developed the music theory and harmony program at the Cornish Institute in Seattle. In addition to Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette, Peacock has worked with Sarah Vaughn, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson and Helen Merrill, among others. In the past 25 years, Peacock's trademark rhythm can be heard on over 25 ECM Records recordings.
