Preservation Resource Center's African American Heritage Program (AAHP) focuses on identifying and preserving the homes and cultural legacy of New Orleans jazz musicians. It is important to save the houses and to recognize the musicians who lived there, at the same time generating awareness of the cultural significance of the older neighborhoods of the city.
AAHP has identified over 503 houses where early jazz legends lived, and has been able to produce and place historic markers for many of them. Three endangered houses where jazz musicians lived and 280 houses since the storm have been saved by PRC and its partners in preservation.
Additionally, this past Fall, AAHP unveiled the pilot of its newest Heritage Education program, My City, My Home, a semester-long curriculum for elementary and middle school students, which promotes the preservation, restoration, and revitalization of New Orleans' historic architecture and neighborhoods.
