The Biting Fish Brass Band plays a classic Nola repertoire of spirituals, blues, gospel and funk. Tunes like “Liza Jane," “Bye and Bye," “Just a Closer Look" and “Tipitina" are mixed in with a few select originals and tasty surprises, all played in the second-line style and all suitable for ridiculous dancing. Howard Fishman, composer, guitarist and bandleader, has come to be recognized as one of today's most agile interpreters of the American songbook. Whether he is performing his own compositions or drawing on a seemingly endless repertoire of American popular music, it is all filtered through a sensibility and aesthetic entirely his own. Aug 10: Kate McGarry Quartet. Growing up in a large Irish Catholic family in Hyannis, Massachusetts, Kate and her nine siblings were surrounded by diverse musical influencesCeltic folk songs, The Mills Brothers, the Beatles, 70s funk and pop. From singing in family talent shows to hearing her first recordings of Bill Evans, Ella Fitzgerald and later Keith Jarrett, Kates ear for song opened to a wide universe of music. Kate is the first and only vocalist signed to Palmetto records. Now regarded as one of the most diverse talents in modern jazz, she has performed or recorded with such artists as Fred Hersch, Kurt Elling, Hank Jones, Clark Terry, Victor Lewis, Maria Schneider, Jason Robert Brown, and Luciana Souza; collaborated with Hersch and Elling, completed writing and recording 63 childrens songs with Keith Ganz for the Heinle Picture Dictionary; and will be heard on an upcoming Sunnyside release with the vocal group MOSS (with Peter Eldridge, Theo Bleckmann Lauren Kinhan, and Luciana Souza). A bold, brave adventurer, McGarry has, by opting for the musical road less traveled, placed herself firmly on the road to ever-widening critical and popular success" Jazz Times Aug 17: KJ Denhert and the NY Unit. With a genre-transcending sound blending urban folk, jazz, funk, R&B and neo-soul, award-winning, New York City-bred and based singer-songwriter and master guitarist KJ Denhert has amassed a loyal following through her series of acclaimed self-released albums and explosive live shows. Her powerful voice, lyrics full of intelligent insight, and musicianship are impeccable.
