“...a guitar Renaissance man." - Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz

“**** Four stars. There are lots of jazz guitarists out there who can play in a Django/Grappelli style, and many who can play bop or Latin jazz. But not many of them are equally comfortable in all of those styles, and that's just part of what makes Josh Workman very special as a guitarist and bandleader." - Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

“…an impressive debut..." - Andy Gilbert, Contra Costa Times

Jazz guitarist Josh Workman's debut CD as a leader, Jumpin' At The Border (September 2004, Tetrachord Music), is earning wide critical acclaim and spent 10 weeks on the JazzWeek national charts, reaching the top 25. It's a stellar compilation of swing, bebop, gypsy-jazz and Latin/Brazilian tunes that featuring the finest jazz musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area including Larry Vuckovich, Noel Jewkes, Harold Jones, Omar Clay, Kim Nalley, Buca Necak, John Santos, Perry Thoorsell, Nat Johnson and The Hot Club of San Francisco.

Workman's musical journey has taken him in many directions throughout his life (from bands paying tribute to Jimi Hendrix to Louie Prima), but jazz has always been his first love. Originally from San Francisco, he moved east early and immersed himself in the New York scene. There, Workman studied and performed and recorded with artists such as the Jazz Passengers (featuring Blondie front-woman, Debbie Harry) and Groove Collective.

After returning to the Bay Area in the mid-90s, Josh joined the renowned jump-swing band, Indigo Swing. During the neo-swing craze of the late 1990s, Indigo Swing was regarded as one of the bands leading the pack, touring internationally and performing 200 to 300 dates per year. Brian Setzer, recognizing their impact on the scene, invited them to tour with him and his orchestra (The Brian Setzer Orchestra), supporting his double platinum release The Dirty Boogie. Indigo Swing headlined many prestigious festivals, such as the Stuttgart Jazz Festival in Germany, where they shared the stage with legends Rosemary Clooney, Lionel Hampton and Dee Dee Bridgewater. The group also enjoyed some crossover success, selling more than 100,000 CDs nationwide. Workman's smooth, soulful approach and deep understanding of musical language have made him a top, in-demand sideman as well; he performs regularly with Larry Vuckovich's Young At Heart Ensemble (which includes previous appearances at the Monterey and San Francisco jazz festivals), The Jason Myers Trio and is a member of the Hot Club of San Francisco.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
