Toronto Downtown Jazz and GMP Productions present influential bassist Victor Wooten and a rare Toronto appearance by legendary guitarist John Scofield will be playing in Toronto in October. Scofield’s latest album, That’s What I Say, reinterprets the music of Ray Charles while Wooten’s Vanguard Record debut, Soul Circus, can only be described as a high-wire act on a bevy of basses. Both will be memorable performances not to be missed.

On That’s What I Say, Scofield crafts each tune in his own distinctive style, putting his indelible stamp on every performance. From the lesser-known Charles gems to some of his most signature tunes, Scofield and his cast of all-star studded collaborators bring the magic and music of Ray Charles back to life. Featured guest artists on the CD include Dr. John, Aaron Neville, David “Fathead” Newman, Mavis Staples, John Mayer and Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers. Be sure to listen for Scofield’s reverent solo acoustic interpretation of one of Charles’ most beloved hits, “Georgia On My Mind”.

As a member of the Grammy winning group, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, Wooten is refocusing on his solo career. Since his last release in 2001, a double CD entitled Live in America, Wooten is back with a vengeance. A three-ring affair, Soul Circus boasts guests such as the Wooten Brothers, Bootsy Collins, Arrested Development rapper/vocalist Speech, Dennis Chambers and a who’s-who of bassists including, Will Lee, Rhonda Smith, Christian McBride, Bill Dickens and Gary Grainger. An innovator on the bass guitar, a talented composer, arranger, producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Wooten proves time and time again why he redefines the word musician.
