Percussionist Joe Chambers will lead his group “The Outlaw Band" --Javon Jackson, saxes; Misha Tsiqanov, piano-keyboards; Dwayne Burno, bass; Steve Berrios, percussion; Joe Chambers, drums, vibraphone--at the new and refurbished Minton's Playhouse.

Minton's Playhouse is still located at 208 West 118th Street in Harlem, between St. Nicholas Avenue and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard (7th Avenue), and still has the original mural overlooking the bandstand.

The new owner, Earl Span, and manager Celeste Sap have maintained some of Minton's old school charm with a long semi- horseschool bar and black and white checkered tile floor, but have added a kind of “downtown" village atmosphere with the lighting and seating arrangements.

Joe Chambers, a member of '60 fraternity that recorded some of Blue Note Records' greatest music, can lay claim to a place alongside such innovative artists as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson and Herbie Hancock. Chambers' intense drumming, trademark blend of cymbal-driven forward motion, deep rhythmic continuity, and explosive creativity, graced many landmark albums including Hubbard's Breaking Point, Shorter's Schizophrenia The All-Seeing Eye and Adam's Apple,Tyner's Tender Moments and Chick Corea's Tones for Joan's Bones.

Chambers' legacy is not only as a percussionist extraordinaire, but as composer as well. His compositions have been covered by Hutcherson, Hubbard, and Max Roach's M'BOOM.

Chambers came into his own as composer during this times, and if the relaxed rhythms of his new disc The Outlaw (Savant SCD 2069) are any indication, he's playing as much vibraphone as drums these days. His new group will feature music from this CD.

THE OUTLAW BAND will be appearing at the new Minton's Playhouse on October 27th and 28th, 2006. Sets are 9 p.m., 10:30 PM and 12:30 a.m. Two drink minimum and $10 music charge. Minton's opens daily at 3:00 p.m.
