A BUSY 2009 CONTINUES FOR FREEDOM JAZZ SUPERHEROES

JFJO :: 02.12.09 :: Oakland, CA :: By Josh Miller

In an effort to out-prolific their already well established business, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey continues to stomp forward in the new year. This week, the quartet went into Josh Roseman' s 58N6 Media Labs in Brooklyn to record Beethoven's 3rd and 6th symphonies, as well as a new EP featuring some of the material the newly minted four-piece have been doing on the current tour.

If that weren't enough, there's a pile of new live material available for reasonably priced download here, including two live recordings from the 2005 “Brian Haas & Friends" tour. The 10.17.05 show from Cleveland, OH features the “Big Bear Quartet" with Haas on keys, Jason Fraticelli on bass, Jason Smart on drums and Mark Southerland on horns. The 10.23.05 show from Cambridge, MA features Haas on keys along with Marco Benevento on keys, Joe Russo on drums, Marc Friedman (The Slip) on bass, as well as Fraticelli, Southerland, and more! You can download the MP3 or FLAC versions of the shows now, and the CD+FLAC bundle versions will be available soon. If you have yet to do so, be sure to download Brian's new solo album entitled Petting Sounds for free at www.BrianRoyHaas.com (JamBase's review of this swell improvised jewel coming up this week).

Additionally, JFJO has just posted four tracks recorded live in Cincinnati at The Blue Wisp on April 9 over here, namely swell new versions of “Tae Parade," “Imam" (Ibrahim), “Julia" (The Beatles) and “In Your Own Sweet Way" (Brubeck).

This week also marks the world premiere of the documentary Icons Among Us: Jazz In The Present Tense, which features JFJO alongside contemporaries such as Bill Frisell, Brian Blade, John Scofield, The Bad Plus, MMW, and many many more. The film made its debut at Lincoln Center in NYC yesterday. Click here for more information.

More “jazz millions" in the works as the band celebrates their 15th anniversary. JFJO's performance at the 40th Umea International Jazz Festival from last October in Sweden is now available to download as mp3 and FLAC, with a CD+FLAC version coming soon, and there's more in the works, including remastered releases of JFJO's back catalog, a new JFJO EP release, summer tour dates and much more!
