JazzWeek Awards Recognize Best Jazz Radio Stations, Programmers, Labels, Musicians Of 2006

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (June 20, 2006) -- The fourth annual JazzWeek Awards were presented at the JazzWeek Awards brunch during the fifth annual JazzWeek Summit on June 17, 2006, in Rochester, N.Y.

Award winners in 13 categories were chosen by readers of JazzWeek in balloting during May, while the Duke Dubois Award winner was chosen by a selection committee. JazzWeek readers submitted nominations for each category and the top five nominees in each comprised the ballot.

WEMU, Ypsilanti, Mich., music director Linda Yohn was chosen the 2006 Duke Dubois Humanitarian Award winner in recognition of her passionate advocacy of jazz and jazz radio. The award is named for the late jazz radio promoter Duke Dubois, who was a pioneer in the field and a mentor and friend to so many in the jazz radio and record business.

A donation of $400 will be made to the IAJE Duke Dubois Scholarship Fund from contibutions made by attendees at this year's summit.

JazzWeek Awards recipients in 14 categories were:

  • Station of the Year, Medium Market: WWOZ, New Orleans
  • Station of the Year, Small Market: KANU, Lawrence, Kan.
  • Programmer of the Year, Major Market: Arturo Gomez, KUVO, Denver
  • Programmer of the Year, Medium Market: Derrick Lucas, WGMC, Rochester, N.Y.
  • Programmer of the Year, Small Market: Russell Haines, WWSP, Stevens Point, Wis.
  • Record Company Promotion Representative Of The Year: Vikki Rzepka, Telarc
  • Major Label Of The Year: Concord
  • Independent Label Of The Year: Palmetto Records
  • Independent Promotion Company Of The Year: New World 'n' Jazz Promotion & Marketing
  • Record Of The Year: Jaco Pastorius Big Band The Word Is Out (Heads Up)
  • Instrumentalist Of The Year: Chris Potter
  • Vocalist Of The Year: Kurt Elling
  • Duke Dubois Humanitarian Award: Linda Yohn, Music Director, WEMU, Ypsilanti, Mich.


JazzWeek is a weekly publication covering the jazz and smooth jazz industry. The JazzWeek Summit is an annual conference for jazz radio, record labels, independent promoters and musicians, covering all aspects of radio programming, promotion, and music selection. The 2007 JazzWeek Summit, planned for June, will be announced in late fall.
