The 2010 Summer Jazz Celebration Is Almost Here! Friday & Saturday July 23-24 - historic Bellefonte PA

Dear Jazz Fans and Friends of JazzPA, Summer is upon us and we're gearing up for a great weekend of jazz in Central PA! The 2010 Summer Jazz Celebration begins on Friday July 23rd and continues all weekend at various locations throughout historic Bellefonte. Use our newly designed website to help you plan your weekend! 2010 Special Guest Wycliffe Gordon

We are thrilled to have Wycliffe Gordon join us as featured guest artist in 2010. A native of New Orleans, Wycliffe is world renowned for his work on the trombone and tuba. You can hear him at the Saturday evening concert at the APS (@ the historic Match Factory). Wycliffe will also lead a public master class Saturday afternoon on the High Street stage. Please plan to attend both very special events. Known for his work with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra, Wycliffe is also a first-class music educator. We're thrilled to have such a highly sought after musician joining us as master artist and featured performer. Also featured in 2010 Russ Kassoff (piano), Jay Leonhart (bass) and Dennis Mackrel (drums) Russ, Jay and Dennis will back up Wycliffe for the Saturday evening concert and propel the Friends Band Saturday afternoon on the High Street Stage. Russ Kassoff

Pianist Russ Kassoff returns to SJC amid the release of his new CD Bird Fly By (featuring Dennis on drums and Jay Anderson on bass). We're grateful Russ can take the weekend off from his conducting spot at the piano of the 19-piece big band that plays on the Broadway stage for Twyla Tharp's Come Fly Away (nominated for 2 Tony Awards). Since we last saw Russ, he's been featured at the Pensacola Jazz Festival and has continued his seasonal haunt at the Knickerbocker in NYC. The Russ Kassoff Big Band has played both St. Peter's Church @ Citicorp and The Barge on the Brooklyn shore of the East River. Russ is sure to thrill us again this July. Dennis Mackrel

Dennis Mackrel, his drum kit and his brilliant propulsion return to SJC again this summer after his work over the winter in Koln, Germany with the WDR Big Band. In April, Dennis appeared at the Pensacola Jazz Festival. He continues his work with the Count Basie Orchestra (at Blues Alley, DC this past April) and will teach this summer at Skidmore's Jazz Institute (Saratoga Springs, NY). Dennis was the 2007 JazzPA guest clinician, giving a spectacular 1-hour master class in Penn State's School of Music jazz wing. He and Russ have spent the last few years as the driving force behind JazzPA's own Friends Band.

Jay Leonhart

We're thrilled to have bassist Jay Leonhart joining us in 2010. Also a renowned singer and songwriter, we hope to hear some of his tunes this July. Jay has worked with Barbara Carroll, Ann Hampton Calloway, Marion McPartland, Tony Bennett, Jim Hall and Frank Sinatra, as well as James Taylor, Sting and Judy Garland, among others. His one-man show The Bass Lesson presents his life in music through song. He has toured world wide for over 40 years. Jay and wife Donna are the proud parents of Carolyn and Michael who both work with Steely Dan. Jay and Wycliffe now perform regularly as a duo which began as a result of their recording This Rhythm on my Mind.

2010 SJC Local Artists in the spotlight

Plan to spend Friday evening with us to hear the new Zeropoint Big Band with Rick Hirsch ($5 cover) and the Arthur Goldstein Quartet with Steve Bowman. Saturday's lineup includes the Tarnished Six, the Friends Band with vocalist Catherine Dupuis, the award-winning State High Jazz Band, SkyTop Blues, Slide Zone with Jay Vonada and more. Come early Saturday to catch a big band rehearsal on High Street Stage, beginning 9:30AM - snag a beverage at Cool Beans and enjoy the morning! Special events are also happening in the Children's Garden (10AM) and at the Farmer's Market (til noon @ the Courthouse). Don't forget to be back at the High Street Stage at 2:30pm to catch Wycliffe Gordon's master class. And then at 7:30pm, dust yourself off and come on over to the APS for the evening concert with Wycliffe, Russ, Jay and Dennis. If you need lodging, please check out our Artist Housing Sponsors. Bellefonte is chock full of gorgeous Victorian B&B's, within walking distance of the weekend's music events. The music will play rain or shine. Be intrepid with us! Bring your folding chairs, a hat for the sun and plan to enjoy a gorgeous weekend in historic Bellefonte with some of the finest jazz this side of the Hudson River. We look forward to seeing you on July 23rd & 24th in downtown Bellefonte for JazzPA's 2010 Summer Jazz Celebration!
