The city of Bonn is already well known as a stronghold of musical tradition, and since 2010 Jazzfest Bonn has added to that cultural foundation with an event that has quickly become a well-attended attraction.

For this year’s 6th edition of the consistently blossoming festival, scheduled for May 7th – 16th, organizers continued to schedule events at a wide variety of lush locations that highlight further artistic perspective throughout the central Bonn area. Inspiring venues include the Beethoven House, Telekom Forum, Bonn University and the State Art Hall.

The festival embraces a format providing equal exposure between established artists and relative newcomers. Public response indicates the balance has struck a proper common chord with the ticket buying public. There is definitely no shortage of adventurous, talented musicians who are attracted to Bonn.

The festival’s first two concerts this year, featuring the Pat Martino Trio and singer/songwriter Ulita Knaus on opening night, followed by pianist Anke Helfrich and the Norbert Gottshalk Quintet; were sold out long in advance. Local fans have quickly become accustomed to booking this May holiday scene on their calendar. Sales have been strong for each concert on the program, including more sellouts.

This year’s line-up of scheduled performers includes Lizz Wright, the Hanno Busch Trio, the Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio, Enrico Rava, the Julia Kadel Trio, Nigel Kennedy’s Hendrix Project, Erik Truffaz with the WDR Big Band, and the Franco Ambrosetti Sextet featuring Terri Lynn Carrington, Greg Osby and Buster Williams, among many others.

There are already numerous, well-established springtime festivals in the North-Rhine Westfalia region of Germany, but there are also twenty million people in the area. In a populace with many regular jazz patrons there is still plenty of room for such a solidly run festival. As a proven, popular jazz occasion, Jazzfest Bonn has risen quickly.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
