The The Blue Note 7 performing Steve Wilson's arrangement of Thelonious Monk's Criss Cross" highlights the latest entry from Jazz Video Guy Bret Primack's bi-weekly blog, jazzvideoguy.tv.
Blue Note Records' 70th Anniversary was the catalyst for the group featuring Nicholas Payton, Steve Wilson, Ravi Coltrane, Bill Charlap, Peter Bernstein, Peter Washington and Lewis Nash playing their own arrangements of Blue Note classics. A few months after the group recorded an album, Mosaic, they began an extensive US tour thanks to Danny Melnick's Absolutely Live. Bret caught up with them last month, in Tucson, where he remains in exile.
Like any working group," he reports, the musical interplay gathers momentum as they spend more time together. It's an organic process that must be nurtured. By the time the Blue Note 7 arrived in the desert, they were ready. I'm honored to have documented these magical moments.”
The video includes revealing comments about the group, by the group, but the complete performance of Criss Cross" is what's featured here. I've shot other groups playing music," Bret explains, but this is really the first time I was able to get right up on the stage and feel like I was part of the music. I look forward to working with other musicians in this unique way."
As soon as I posted this video on YouTube, listeners who attended Blue Note 7 Concerts began leaving very enthusiastic comments about the music, so its obvious their music has struck a very responsive chord with many listeners.”
