As the saying goes, two heads are better than one. Legendary jazz pianist, composer and historian Terry Waldo
, and internationally renowned jazz vocalist Tatiana Eva-Marie
demonstrate their musical synergy in their latest single, “I Double Dare You,” their lively take on the 1937 classic jazz song by Terry Shand and Jimmy Eaton.
The single, which is out now, is from the dynamic duo’s new album, I Double Dare You
, an eclectic compilation of jazz-pop songs from the ‘20s and ‘30s. The album is set to be released on Turtle Bay Records
on August 6, 2021.
“I Double Dare You,” depicts a charming flirtatious banter with a love interest, which Eva-Marie delivers in her signature effervescent vocal style. The vocalist (who has been acclaimed by Vanity Fair, The NY Times, Wall Street Journal and DownBeat), has had an affinity with the song since childhood. She says, “When I was about seven years old, I became obsessed with the soundtrack to Woody Allen’s Radio Days
and I used to play it on a loop. “I Double Dare You” was featured on that album, a very pretty version sung by Bea Wain with the Larry Clinton Orchestra. It was one of the first ten jazz tunes I ever learned. I loved how cheeky and aggressive the lyrics were because at that time, that was my approach when flirting with boys. I recall crooning that song into the ears of many terrified boys throughout most of my childhood.”
Waldo, who was instrumental in reviving ragtime music in the '70s and called “ragtime pianist nonpareil and eminent scholar of the form” by The New York Times, brings his captivating piano skills to the track.
In addition, Waldo is very well versed in producing jazz albums inspired by the 1920s. He brought together some of the best musicians he knew that would help capture the vivacity and sophistication of the 1920s jazz era. Adding Eva-Marie’s scintillating vocals was icing on the cake.
Waldo says, “I used to play ‘I Double Dare You’ with Joe Muranyi
. He was my clarinetist for many years and he used to sing it with our band. He learned it from Louis Armstrong when he played with him in Louis’ last years. I always loved the song and was delighted when Tatiana wanted to sing it.”
Although their ages span decades, both artists come together effortlessly on “I Double Dare You,” the new single from their upcoming collaboration album by the same name. The song is now available everywhere to stream or download (twice...if you dare!)
I Double Dare You, the new album by Tatiana Eva-Marie and Terry Waldo on Turtle Bay Records, drops on August 6, 2021.
