Jazz at Lincoln Center (J@LC) will present Arturo O'Farrill and his Latin Jazz Quintet in its first installment of the 2002-03 Jazz in the Schools Tour entitled “Arroz con Bebop." The group will be visiting New York City metropolitan schools October 21 - November 1, 2002. The 50-minute program is designed to introduce Latin jazz to young people through participation, demonstration, and performance. Key topics include the common roots of jazz and Latin music, important stylistic characteristics, and historical and chronological milestones of each. In addition to daytime performances, there will be four special evening performances that are produced in collaboration with the non-profit organization Midori & Friends, founded in 1992 by the renowned violinist to promote music education throughout New York City.

This marks the second time that O'Farrill will lead the Jazz in the Schools tour. In March 2002, he led a Latin jazz quintet for 24 educational performances that reached over 5,000 people throughout the NYC metropolitan area. Selections for this fall's tour include Timonbo (Puente/Santamaria/Bobo), Manteca (Gllespie/Pozo), Mambo Inn (Bauza), Oye Como Va (Puente), as well as traditional bebop standards, ragtime, habaneras, and danzons.

Arturo O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Educated at the Manhattan School of Music and the Brooklyn College Conservatory, O'Farrill played piano with the Carla Bley Big Band from 1979 through 1983. He then went on to develop as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Papo Vazquez, The Fort Apache Band, Lester Bowie, and Harry Belafonte. In 1995, O'Farrill agreed to direct the band that preserved much of his father's music, Chico O'Farrill's Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, which has been in residence at New York City's Birdland for the past few years as well as performing throughout the world.

Besides recording three albums as a leader for Milestone Records, 32 Jazz, and M & I (Bloodlines, A Night in Tunisia, and Cumana Bop), O'Farrill has appeared on numerous records including Habanera with Alberto Shiroma, and the soundtrack to the critically-acclaimed movie Calle 54. O'Farrill was a special guest soloist at three landmark Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts - Afro-Cuban Jazz: Chico O'Farrill's Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, November 1995; Con Alma: The Latin Tinge in Big Band Jazz, September 1998; and the 2001 Jazz at Lincoln Center Gala: The Spirit of Tito Puente, November 2001. O'Farrill was recently named musical director of the newly formed, Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, J@LC's second resident orchestra, which was inaugurated in the 2002-03 season.

Between them, the members of O'Farrill's Latin Jazz quintet Peter Brainin, Andy Gonzalez, Phoenix Rivera, and Joe Gonzalez have performed and recorded with some of the greatest musicians in jazz. These artists include Chico O'Farrill, Tito Puente, Hilton Ruiz, Steve Berrios, Ray Barretto, Mario Rivera, Jerry Gonzalez, Mario Bauza, and Eddie Palmieri.
