Jazz Greats David “Fathead” Newman, Christian McBride, Akua Dixon and Steve Turre to Appear at Bloomfield College’s Westminster Arts Center
The Westminster Arts Center at Bloomfield College, Bloomfield New Jersey, announces the premiere season of its new series, JazzTalks, intimate evenings of conversation and performance with contemporary jazz artists on their life and music. The premiere season of JazzTalks will include saxophone giant David “Fathead” Newman, Grammy-winning bassist Christian McBride, and cellist Akua Dixon with her husband, trombonist Steve Turre of the Saturday Night Live band. Each JazzTalks evening will engage these artists in conversation and concert with Artistic Director David Rosenak.
Rosenak, an announcer with Newark’s WBGO Jazz 88, was for many years associated with both the Lyrics and Lyricists and Jazz In July series at New York’s 92nd Street Y. Both of these popular, long-running series were based upon a unique mix of conversation with original artists, and performances of the works they created. JazzTalks will draw upon this concept, with Rosenak inviting prominent jazz musicians into conversations about their life and music, leading into intimate solo performances of their favorite works.
The Monday night series will open with David “Fathead” Newman on March 28, 2005, followed by Christian McBride on April 18, and Akua Dixon and Steve Turre on April 25. All programs take place at 8:00 PM.
Each of the three evenings are designed to both inform and entertain, giving the audience greater insight into the humanity of the artist, and a greater appreciation for the jazz art form. A particular focus of the series will be to explore each artist’s personal and artistic development within the context of their own journey through the social, spiritual, economic, political and popular trends of American life. The goal will be to reveal each artist’s story, so as to invite students and the general public to personally relate to the artist’s life experience. A reception will follow each evening, giving students and patrons the opportunity to make personal contact with each artist.
In announcing the series, artistic director Rosenak said, “It is an honor to bring these gifted, world-class artists to our stage. They have, each of them, made enormous contributions to the jazz art form, even as they continue to bring new and invigorating styles and forms to their music. JazzTalks will give us an opportunity to get to know the humanity of these artists, and understand how each of their journeys has influenced their music.”
