Clay Jenkins
If the name Clay Jenkins doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps you’ve heard of his touring groups, namely Harry James, Buddy Rich and the County Basie Orchestra. Anyone familiar with these legendary big bands will appreciate the prestige this extraordinary jazz trumpeter brings to Appleton this weekend.

One of the most sought after jazz performers and instructors in the nation, Jenkins veered off his global performing course for a few days to stop at Lawrence University. The esteemed professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Rochester’s prestigious Eastman School of Music in New York made the trip to the Midwest thanks to a connection with an old college chum.

“Fred (Sturm) and I were friends at North Texas State University, and then colleagues at The Eastman School of Music until he took over as chairman of the Jazz Department at Lawrence University,” said Jenkins. Jenkins has been giving workshops and rehearsing with Lawrence jazz students for the last couple days and will perform with the big band and the faculty jazz quartet on Saturday night, March 2, 2013 at 8:00 pm in the Lawrence University Chapel.

An active performance and recording artist, Jenkins has presented jazz clinics around the world and will be back in Wisconsin later this spring to host The Northwoods Jazz Camp in Rhinelander, along with Grammy-nominated saxophonist Kim Richmond.
