On Monday 15 June Jazz FM, the rapidly expanding radio station and UK's interactive home of jazz, releases this year's long-awaited compilation, The Sound of Jazz 2009 Vol 1. Compiled by three of the station's most prolific presenters, Ralph Tee, Steve Quirk and Mike Vitti, the album is an elegant reflection of Jazz FM's commitment to quality jazz with a selection of current jazz hits and soul classics.

The double album boasts some of the biggest names in jazz and includes many of the station's signature tracks from Mario Biondi, Pieces of a Dream, Bobby Lyle, and Ronnie Laws. Listeners will enjoy rare finds, many previously unreleased in the UK including Jeff Lorber's You Got Something, Kevin Whalum's Wondermaze and Darren Rahn's version of Chaka Khan's classic What'cha Gonna Do For Me featuring the late great Wayman Tisdale. This third album on Jazz FM Records since its re-launch in October of last year, follows in the footsteps of their first Sound Of.. compilation and comes hot on the heels of the hugely successful Dinner Jazz, compiled by their multi-award-winning presenter, Sarah Ward.

CD One sets the tone with Earth, Wind and Fire's Can't Hide Love and includes George Duke's Sausalito, a very original take on Gil Scott Heron's infamous The Bottle by Maysa, and the jazzy rhythms of the much sought after Italian artist Mario Biondi with This is What You Are, a track that was first played out by Jazz FM's very own Peter Young.

Steve Quirk offers a taste of his favourite smooth jazz melodies from Jeff Lorber, Pieces of a Dream, Kenny G, Kevin Whalum singing about Frankie Beverly and Stevie Wonder and new music from Heston James Day and Eric Darius with If I Ain't Got You.

CD Two also features Darren Rhan's cover version of Chaka Khan's What'cha Gonna Do For Me, acting as an honourable tribute to the greatly revered late bassist Wayman Tisdale. Esther Phillips covers another Gil Scott Heron classic Home Is Where the Hatred Is and Bobby Lyle covers Anita Baker's Been So Long.

Mike Vitti adds in a few of his stand-out tracks including Ronnie Laws's vocal Every Generation, Bob Baldwin's jazzy piano version on the Jocelyn Brown classic Somebody Else's Guy which brings back Jocelyn for this 2009 re-take and other tracks include Jazz and Funk legends Ramsey Lewis, Lonnie Liston Smith and Donald Byrd.

This timeless double album seamlessly brings together the best of jazz and soul classics from Jazz FM's unrivalled back catalogue. The Sound of Jazz FM 2009 Vol 1 is set to be the soundtrack for the summer.
