CALL FOR SCORES & PAPERS

The second International Jazz Composers' Symposium, co-sponsored by the University of South Florida Center for Jazz Composition and the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) in partnership with BMI, will be held in Park City, Utah from June 12-14, 2008 in conjunction with the new IAJE/PARK CITY JAZZ SUMMIT. The Symposium is designed as a forum to bring jazz composers of all ages and nationalities together for an informal exchange of ideas, information, and inspiration. This year's Symposium will include noted master artists Stefon Harris, Bill Holman, Jim McNeely, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and Terrence Blanchard, among others, in a series of lectures, master classes, panel discussions, new music reading sessions, research presentations, and concerts.

CALL FOR SCORES

As part of the Symposium, composers of all ages and nationalities are invited to submit scores for inclusion on one of three new music reading sessions. Applicants can select to submit in one of three categories:

* big band,
* small group, or
* student/young artist (must be 26 years old or younger or actively enrolled in a university program)

Works selected from the student/young artist category will be performed in a master class setting with the guest artist panel providing invaluable feedback. Selected works in the open categories will be read before the assembled Symposium audience with the composer able to provide brief remarks and/or insights into the composition. In addition, the guest artist panel will award one or more of the open category works to receive a cash prize of $500. (Student/young artist submissions are not eligible for this prize.)

To qualify, all works must have been composed within the last three years and must not have been published or released on a professional recording. Compositions should be scored for jazz big band (5,4,4,PBGD) or, for the small group category (no more than 9 musicians consisting of any subset of that ensemble (ex. Sx., Trb., PBD)). Only works of less than 10 minutes will be performed in their entirety. Longer works will have to be excerpted. Only one composition may be submitted in each category. Selected big band compositions will be performed by Chuck Owen & the Jazz Surge with personnel for the small group works culled from this group.

Interested composers should submit:

* a completed application form found on the CJC,
* three bound copies of the score(s),
* a recording (CDs only please), and
* a single page bio.

Note: Scores and recordings should exclude any information that might identify the composer but must include title of work, instrumentation, and duration.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Symposium also welcomes proposals from scholars and composers of all ages and nationalities for presentations of their own research related to aspects of jazz composition: analyses, historical perspectives, the creative process, business/audience models, criticism, etc. Selected paper presentations will also appear in the CJC's anticipated Journal of Jazz Composition Research.

Both papers and posters will be accommodated. Paper presentations will be limited to 25 minutes - including time to respond to questions and comments from the audience. The poster sessions at the Jazz Composers' Symposium are designed to be relaxed and informal; with presenters able to engage in discussions of their research/analyses with interested individuals. Listening stations will be provided, if desired. Further information about posters and their preparation will be provided by the CJC upon request.

Research papers and posters must not have been presented at any other conference or forum. While they may have been submitted for publication, they must not have appeared in print prior to the Symposium. Papers presented at other conferences, however, will be considered for poster presentation if the audience is deemed substantially different than that anticipated to attend the Symposium. A statement specifying the particulars of any prior presentations must accompany the submission.

Composers may present analyses of their own composition (in either format) but are encouraged to do so only if their work is widely disseminated through recordings and/or publications.

Applicants should submit an application form found on the CJC website. In addition, paper submissions require two copies of an abstract while poster submissions should include two copies of all the components of their presentations (discussion may be in an abbreviated form). Each applicant should include a brief bio.

SUBMISSION DATE FOR BOTH PAPERS AND SCORES

To assure consideration, submissions must be received by the Center for Jazz Composition on or before Wednesday, January 23, 2008.

REVIEW/NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of qualified reviewers. Notification of acceptance will be made by the Center for Jazz Composition on February 15th. Presenters will be notified by email.
