    About Jazz Band Classic

The New York Youth Symphony's opportunities for young musicians include a merit-based tuition-free swing-era jazz band whose students study, rehearse, and perform rich jazz music, the only indigenous American music form.  Jazz Band Classic, a 17-member brass- wind-and-percussion ensemble modeled on the big bands of the 1930's and 40's, was initiated in 2002 to bring this heritage to another, more diverse generation, exposing it to the original orchestrations and styles of bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, and Benny Goodman, among others, as well as contemporary sounds which define the genre for the current generation.

Jazz Band Classic rehearsals weekly in midtown Manhattan and presents eight performances during its season: three at the Garage Restaurant, four at Symphony Space, and a final performance in the Allen Room of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Guest artists for the 2010-2011 season include trumpeter Marcus Printup, saxophonist Donny McCaslin, and vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway.
