Cliveden of the National Trust invites you to attend their annual, “Jazz at Cliveden Jazz Festival as part of their ongoing preservation of America's oldest art form. On Sunday, July 22, from 3-7 p.m., on the Cliveden estate, bring a chair or blanket, some food and some friends to enjoy an afternoon of great jazz. This year's menu features legendary jazz organist, Ms. Trudy Pitts, vocalist, Joanna Pascale and the next generation of talented musicians, the Clef Club Youth Ensemble under the direction of Lovett Hines. Entrances are on Cliveden Street and Germantown Avenue. A donation of $5.00 is required to gain admission and vendors will be on hand as well. This event is rain or shine.

Trudy and Mr. C. are Philadelphia's best- kept secret, but the truth is that most people in the know have been hip to Trudy's piano and organ work and Mr. C's drumming and promoting for years. Trudy is a native Philadelphian who began playing piano at age six. Her mother, too, was a musician and inspired this family tradition. Earning a degree in music education was only natural for this talented prodigy. She studied at Philadelphia's Musical Academy, Temple University, and Juilliard, among other institutions. During these years she reached out to the classics and built a base from which future compositions and arrangements would spring.

Jazz made its way into Trudy's life and was nurtured by her soul mate and husband, Bill Carney (a.k.a. Mr. C). He became a major influence shaping and implementing Trudy's musical skills. Trudy has managed to consolidate her mission to play creatively with the values taught to her by her mother. “She taught me early on, don't let anything get in between you and your music." Trudy and Mr. C became a family of music and a musical family. They unified their efforts and forged ahead.

Trudy became a sensation on the Hammond organ, and everybody who is anybody knows why: she has a strong foundation on which to build her new sound and a musical genius that is matched only by her determination to succeed. “Whatever I undertook, the job got done, and it wasn't a matter of not being prepared or not having the skills or not having the right vibe or attitude. Because my contention is that you begin to know your outer edges, and if you're not emotionally prepared to do a job, then you should not take it rather than take it and complain," she says. Joanna Pascale has established herself as a compelling and skilled vocalist. At just 24 years old Joanna already has a working repertoire of over 400 songs. She brings a strong emotional element as well as a solid sense of swing to her uncommonly large catalogue of jazz standards. Joanna has regular gigs as a leader at some of Philadelphia's premiere jazz venues, as well as regular appearances with Philadelphia's most respected jazz musicians. Joanna's love for jazz voice eventually took her to Philadelphia's Performing Arts High School, and then to Temple University, where she studied music with such instructors as Terell Stafford and Bruce Barth.
