New York, NY February 1, 2006 Jack Kleinsinger's “Highlights in Jazz," New York's longest running jazz series, is pleased to present two 'Highlights' favorites featuring the piano artistry of Barbara Carroll and Cyrus Chestnut in a very special evening called I Love a Piano. Barbara Carroll is an elegant jazz pianist, composer and vocalist who has long been regarded as one of the most fascinating purveyors of swinging jazz piano and rhythmic, expressive vocals. Influenced early on by Nat Cole, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker and other important musicians of the era, noted jazz critic Leonard Feather called her “the first girl to play bop piano." Her diverse musical career has encompassed appearing on Broadway with her trio in Rodger's and Hammerstein's “Me and Juliet" to appearances in concert halls, jazz clubs, on major TV shows and festival stages throughout the world. She has performed for President and Ms. Clinton at the White House. She has made over thirty recordings on labels such as Atlantic, RCA Victor, Verve, Blue Note and DRG with an array of jazz luminaries that includes Art Farmer, Jay Leonhart, Claudio Roditi, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli and Randy Sandke. Ms. Carroll is also the 1998 recipient of a MAC Award for “Best Major Jazz Performance." Cyrus Chestnut, the Baltimore born pianist, first received his musical training from his father, McDonald Chestnut, at age five. After studies at the Peabody Preparatory Conservatory and the Berklee School of Music his professional career began with Jon Hendricks (1986-88), Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison (1988-1990), and Wynton Marsalis (1991). In September 1991 he became Betty Carter's pianist, staying with her until 1993. A thoroughly schooled musician with a formidable two-handed technique whose approach blends aspects of Art Tatum, Bud Powell, Ahmad Jamal, Wynton Kelly, and McCoy Tyner. Cyrus Chestnut is an excellent improviser, composer, arranger and pianist who offers his listeners joy, and inspiration. There will be special surprise guest on this show! All concerts will take place at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center (Borough of Manhattan Community College), 199 Chambers Street (between Greenwich and West Street). The tickets are $30.00 and $27.50, for students. They can be purchased at the theater box office or by calling (212) 220-1460.
