GROUP SET TO MAKE THEIR NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT AT BLUE NOTE, OCTOBER 19-24

The New Gary Burton Quartet, featuring guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Antonio Sanchez, is set to perform at Blue Note on October 19-24. The week long engagement will serve as the North American debut for the group, which made its world premiere at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in August 2010.

For over five decades, Gary Burton, the Grammy® award winning vibraphonist and former Berklee College of Music Executive Vice President, has crossed musical barriers and generations with his innovative ensembles. His quartets have featured a unique mix of established musicians while discovering and showcasing younger musicians, many of whom would soon become some of the world's most recognizable artists. Musicians such as Larry Coryell, Jerry Hahn, Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny, Tiger Okoshi, John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and most recently Julian Lage, began their careers in Burton's esteemed quartet.

With Lage, Colley and Sanchez, this is Burton's new incarnation and revitalized group: a new quartet for a new era.

“These are all musicians I have played with in the past, though never in this combination," Burton reflects. “Julian is a constant inspiration and we have played enough now to have a very deep rapport once we are on stage and we get into the songs. And, it just doesn't get any better than having Scott and Antonio for your rhythm section. We all have carved out some time to put this new group together, and I am very much looking forward to playing with everyone."

One of the greatest vibraphonists of all time, Burton's pioneering four-mallet technique can make him sound like two or three players simultaneously. Recording different periods of his career extensively for RCA, Atlantic, ECM, GRP, and Concord Music Group, Burton has performed and collaborated closely with musicians such as Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Roy Haynes, Eberhard Weber, Stephane Grappelli, Carla Bley, Paul Bley, Gato Barbieri, Ralph Towner, Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto, Stan Getz, Makoto Ozone, Steve Lacy, Ástor Piazzolla, and Wolfgang Muthspiel, among others.

Burton returned to familiar ground in 2004 with the release of Generations, a bop-influenced album featuring a quartet of younger musicians (featuring Lage, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer James Williams). Burton paired with the same group the following year for a second release entitled Next Generation. In 2009 he recorded Quartet Live!, a Grammy® nominated Concord disc reprising music from Burton's 1970s period. The group, known as The Gary Burton Quartet Revisited, featuring Metheny, Sanchez, and Steve Swallow and toured the US and Europe.

Burton plans to record the New Quartet on Concord and tour in 2011.
