The International Body Music Festival performers have recently returned from a stellar Lincoln Center (NY) show and are gearing up to host their annual six-day festival for the first time in São Paulo, Brazil in Mid-November. Before leaving, Oakland's Crosspulse has already scheduled the International Body Music Festival Mini-Fest; a concert and day of workshops for Saturday, December 4th at Freight & Salvage in Berkley, CA. Led by Artistic Director Keith Terry, the concert is a sizzling smorgasbord of contemporary and traditional Body Music featuring all California artists—an irresistible hand-clapping, foot-stomping, chest-whomping extravaganza! The day of workshops will include culture-specific styles, teacher trainings for both music and classroom teachers, a free family workshop, and more. In addition, Crosspulse will donate in-school IBMF assembly programs to two Oakland Public Elementary Schools on Friday, December 3rd. Keith Terry enthusiastically states, “Although we are extremely excited to be taking our annual festival internationally and will continue to do so, we also wanted to pay tribute to our fellow California body musicians and performers, while celebrating and giving back to the Bay Area, where the festival was founded and continues to grow."

Los Cenzontles (Nahuatl for “The Mockingbirds") dig deep into Mexican traditions to promote dignity, pride and cultural understanding. The group has pioneered revivals of Mexican roots music in California bringing traditions to new generations. Here they will perform Zapateado Mexicano. The group's core members also operate Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. The Center has been training area youth in traditional Mexican music, dance, and crafts since 1994. www.loscenzontles.com

Cerro Negro featuring Flamenco palmas and footwork from Frank Giordano, Dusty Brough, John Martin III, Juan del Valle, and Clara Rodriguez. In the past 10 years, Cerro Negro has performed throughout the United States from Boston to Hawaii, and in a myriad of venues ranging from cultural centers and Universities, to regional festivals and concert halls. Cerro Negro's passionate sound transcends generations and appeals to a wide variety of musical tastes because of its coupling of exotic percussion and emotional vocals. Joining the group are two of the Bay Area's finest dancers Juan del Valle and Clara Rodriguez. This group represents a broad pallette of Flamenco sounds, showcasing the unique body percussion of this grand tradition and adding a few of their own. www.cerronegro.net

Danny “Slapjazz" Barber is a master of traditional African American Hambone body percussion. Based in San Diego, Slapjazz has appeared on concert stages throughout the US, sitting in with such bands as the Carolina Chocolate Drops and the Bayou Brothers Band. He has a singular style with beautiful syncopations.

James Harding has been teaching music to children for over 20 years, primarily at the San Francisco School. He presents workshops for other music teachers all over the US and internationally in Australia, Thailand, Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Austria. He collects hand games wherever he goes, recently learning a cool Argentinean one from two 8-year-old boys in the airport near Iguazu Falls.

Linda Akiyama has 25 years of experience teaching in public elementary schools. She has used rhythms, chants, and rhymes extensively to support the teaching of academic subjects. Linda also teaches science education courses through the SEP program at UCSF.

Elizabeth Strong with Dan Cantrell and Evan Fraser: Elizabeth Strong's understanding of Middle Eastern dance and Eastern folk music began as a child in the California folk music community. As a teenager she began to study the dance formally and passionately. After receiving a BA in History, Elizabeth began to research dance in Bulgaria, Tunisia, Greece, Morocco, Egypt and most notably in Turkey, where she developed a relationship with members of the Rom community. Elizabeth has maintained the integrity and spirit of traditional dance forms inside of a contemporary framework. She has worked with other innovative artists including Rachel Brice, Jillina Carlano, Jill Parker, Dan Cantrell, Mardi Love, and Zoe Jakes, and currently teaches and performs internationally.

Keith Terry and Evie Ladin: Keith Terry is the Artistic Director of the IBMF, and has developed a contemporary Body Music style and methodology well-used by classroom and music teachers for a host of applications throughout curricula. Keith has two instructional DVDs on Crosspulse Media, with the third DVD and accompanying book due out in 2011.

Bending and blending traditional and contemporary music and dance, allowing rhythm to forge connections in unexpected ways, Keith Terry with Evie Ladin brings together diverse influences—Jazz and World Music, Appalachian Hambone and Step Dancing traditions—with delightful humor and skill. www.crosspulse.com
