Indaba Music, the leading online music collaboration web application, announced an opportunity for musicians to collaborate with world-class artists through a new program titled, “Celebrate and Collaborate with Yo-Yo Ma”. Starting October 7th 2008, Mr. Ma is making available a pre-recorded melody of the classic piece, “Dona Nobis Pacem” (Give Us Peace). Members of the Indaba Music community will be challenged to record a counterpart to Mr. Ma’s cello or create a set of variations based on the main musical theme.

“Indaba Music is a community of and for musicians and we're excited that Yo-Yo Ma has joined our extensive network of artists,” said Dan Zaccagnino, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Indaba Music. “Time and again, Mr. Ma has proven the value of collaborating with musicians from different musical backgrounds to innovate and create inspiring and beautiful music - through projects like the Silk Road Project, Obrigado Brazil and now through Indaba Music."

A community of professional, amateur, and student musicians, Indaba Music is offering this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with Yo-Yo Ma. Several prominent music schools and music educators will use this as a teaching opportunity and integrating it into coursework. The grand prize winner, selected by Mr. Ma himself, will have the chance to record a new piece of music with him.

“I have always been a believer in what I can learn from other musicians of all ages, from all musical traditions,” said Yo-Yo Ma. “Through Indaba Music’s growing community of artists, I feel that I will find not only amazing talent with which to work but also engage a new audience – I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.” Musicians will have until December 31, 2008 to submit their piece. Mr. Ma has challenged musicians to be creative and inspire him, including by submitting versions that move beyond the classical genre. This unprecedented opportunity follows two other successful Indaba Music campaigns with Mariah Carey and Third Eye Blind.

“Yo-Yo Ma values new kinds of artistic collaboration. His latest album, Songs of Joy and Peace, features creative collaborations with some of his favorite artist friends, James Taylor, Diana Krall, Alison Krauss, Chris Botti and Rene Fleming,” said Alex Miller, Senior VP/General Manager of Sony BMG Masterworks & Victor Label Group. “With Indaba Music, we’re extending an open invitation to the worldwide music community and are excited about what musicians will create.”
