Technology Track: Jazz Video Games, Podcasts and Online Quizzes: Students Listen, You Teach and Blackboard Grades. A demonstration of JazzBandstand, a game where students create bands and learn about style, and other video games and online activities, leads to a new approach to teaching jazz history (either majors or non-majors) where students listen and analyze jazz online. Clinic: Lorraine Desmarais--The Jazz Trio. Presented in both English and French, this session will discuss the interaction, dialogue, and complicity between members of a jazz trio: piano, bass, and drums. Additional discussion will include one's role as soloist and accompanist, virtuosity in playing and spaces when nonplaying, and keeping fresh on every new interpretation of a composition. Clinic: Vocal Percussion: The Art of Vocal Drums. This is a hands-on workshop on how to create percussion sounds using the voice. This is a useful tool for small and large vocal ensembles to aid in keeping the rhythm intact, or to simply add variety to any given song. This clinic can help your lead players by giving them basic routines on warming-up and practical approaches to endurance building and the upper register. Clinician: John Thomas. Clinic: Borrowing from the Greats. One can learn a lot about soloing by transcribing and analyzing jazz solos. The clinician will demonstrate how one can learn everything from simple rhythm figures to advanced jazz solo techniques directly from actual jazz recordings. Clinic: Ten Habits of Highly Effective Scat Singers. From Ella Fitzgerald to Bobby McFerrin, the great jazz singers have used ten common elements in their improvisational solos. This session will help singers of all performance levels use these habits to refine the art and craft of scat singing. Technology Track: The Virtual Music Classroom. With the use of video conferencing, blogs, web pages and podcasts, regular music lessons and workshops can be taught online. This lecture will cover a variety of necessary topics to create a virtual music classroom including the basics of setting up the virtual classroom with minimal resources as well as samples of items to include in the online student resource area that can be used in both the normal and virtual music classroom setting. Industry Track: Music & Lyrics. Prominent jazz vocalists discuss the art and business involved in creating or adapting lyrics for jazz standards. Panel: Wynton Kelly and the Musical Company He Kept. Pianist Wynton Kelly (1931-1971) played with just about EVERYBODY! Cannonball, Miles, Coltrane, Dizzy.... to name a few. His professional career began in 1946 and includes a discography of over 200 recordings. The panelists, all of whom played with Kelly, will play a select number of tracks and discuss his vital role as sideman, accompanist, soloist, and bandleader in numerous settings. Workshop: Selecting and Scheduling Jazz on The Radio. Sponsored by JazzWeek There's no one method used by stations to select which tracks are played and when. Some radio stations schedule every song using software, some follow a clock or rotation, and some leave it completely to the host. Music directors and programmers from jazz stations discuss their methods of music scheduling and evaluate the pluses and minuses of each. Moderator: Derrick Lucas (WGMC).
