Two jazz greats arrive in South Jersey for an evening of exciting jazz fusion! The HILTON RUIZ / DAVE VALENTIN LATIN JAZZ ENSEMBLE will be delivering its sizzling combination of Latin jazz, progressive jazz and blues Saturday, April 9 in the Gordon Theater of Rutgers University, Camden Campus, as part of Camden County’s the 2005 Cross County Concert Series. Showtime is 8 p.m.

DAVE VALENTIN, who has recorded over 15 albums for the jazz label GRP, combines the influence of pop, R&B, and Brazilian music with Latin jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover jazz. Valentin’s experience with the Latin percussion helped him develop a distinctive, percussive style of playing flute. By doing so, Valentin is credited with expanding the map of modern jazz. His masterful blends of samba, meringue, jazz, R&B, pop and Salsa grooves, has won him a worldwide fan base. In 2003, Valentin received a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.

One of the finest pianists in Afro-Cuban jazz, HILTON RUIZ is also an expert bop player. He effortlessly combines the passion of Afro-Caribbean rhythms with the daring of jazz improvisation. A child prodigy who appeared at Carnegie Recital Hall when he was eight, Ruiz gigged with Latin bands as a teenager and gained early experience playing with Joe Newman, Frank Foster, and Freddie Hubbard. Ruiz has performed and recorded with such greats as Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, and Dizzie Gillespie. Original music by Ruiz can be heard on soundtracks for Low Down Dirty Shame, American Beauty, and Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Audiences all around the world have experienced the hot Latin rhythms and cheerful jazz vibrations of this wonderfully entertaining ensemble. Together, Ruiz and Valentin are a magical, once in a lifetime jazz experience.
