Hilario Duran and his trio, comprised of Cuban-born Duran, renowned Canadian bassist, Roberto Occhipinti and Grammy award winner, Cuban-born percussionist Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernandez, have taken the wonderful classic Cuban music called Danzon to new heights. New Danzon, a fresh and vibrant Latin jazz offering, blends the traditional with sophisticated be-bop and technical musical mastery. Captured on disc by Alma Records and distributed by Universal Music, this fantastic CD was released September 2004.

Hilario began his formal musical training at 15, at the prestigious Conservatory Amadeo Roldan in La Habana, Cuba. His talent and dedication soon propelled him into the professional jazz world. One of his major creative partners has been another Cuban, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, who formed his own group in 1981. An integral part of Arturo’s dynamic ensemble, acting as composer, arranger and producer in addition to playing piano and electric keyboard, he decided, after a decade, to venture out alone and formed his own group, Perspectiva. This innovative group thrilled crowds throughout Europe and Latin America and also released two critically acclaimed CDs. Duran was also an integral part of Jane Bunnett’s Spirits of Havana.

Since moving to Canada, Hilario Duran has become a valuable part of the Canadian music scene and a key member of the jazz faculty at Humber College, acting as both an adjunct piano professor and ensemble professor. One to collaborate with a variety of musicians, Hilario sustains a wonderful working relationship with another Alma recording artist, Roberto Occhipinti, who served as a bass player and producer of New Danzon.
