“HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZ" PRESENTS

A Salute To Jimmy Cobb Thursday, March 10, 2005 8PM

February 9, 2005 Jack Kleinsinger's “Highlights in Jazz," New York's longest running jazz series is pleased to present their annual salute to a living jazz legend Jimmy Cobb Thursday, March 10, 2005 8PM. Featuring and All-Star line-up: Clark Terry, Bill Charlap, Lou Donaldson, Eric Alexander, Peter Bernstein, Mike LeDonne, Kenny Washington and a special performance by Jimmy Cobb and Cobb’s Mob.

A superb, mostly self-taught drummer, Jimmy Cobb (born Jan. 20, 1929 in Washington, D.C.) has been a dominant accompanist and outstanding soloist for nearly 50 years. He approaches the drum kit in both a melodic and percussive fashion, never playing overly long or rambling solos. He's known for working slightly ahead of the beat, and has anchored many fine sessions as well as spending five years with Miles Davis in the '50s and '60s appearing on what many consider one of the most important jazz recording ever made, Kind Of Blue. Here’s what noted jazz author Stanley Crouch has to say about Jimmy Cobb.

When he replaced Philly Joe Jones and came into the cauldron that was the Miles Davis Sextet, Jimmy Cobb was ready for that, too. He knew how and when to explode, how to lift the bandstand with the thunder tools of the drums and cymbals. He also knew how to smooth it all the way down, how to saddle soap and soften the beat when the piece called for it. The blinking skyline of rhythm that serves as an inspiration to the melodic and harmonic dancing of the featured instrumentalists was given sublime authority by the combination of Wynton Kelly's piano, the bass of Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb behind that ensemble of percussive instruments. That rhythm section was one of the very best in the history of the art. They put the 'S' in swing.

In addition to his time with Miles Jimmy also played and recorded with Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell and J.J. Johnson. He played on the film soundtrack “Seven Days In May," and later worked with David Amram. He worked with Sarah Vaughan through the '70s, and was featured on a public television film of a Vaughan concert at the Wolf Trap Jazz Festival. Cobb also worked with Richie Cole, Sonny Stitt, Nat Adderley and Ricky Ford. During the '80s he worked with the Joe Albany Trio.

In the late 1990s Jimmy organized Cobb's Mob the nucleus of which was formed while he was teaching at the New School. They recorded two notable CDs, Only For the Pure of Heart (Fable/Lightyear) and Cobb's Groove (Milestone). Jimmy also appears on the critically acclaimed 4 Generations of Miles CD released on Chesky Records.

There will be a special surprise guest on this show.
