The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band is the world’s most authentic swing band. It stars veteran jazz and blues musicians whose roots reach to the classic period of the 20’s and 30’s. Many have been together since 1973, the “originals” actually “jumped” at the Woodside, and “stomped” the Savoy with Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, “Fats” Waller, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and other jazz greats like Billy Eckstine. These are the artists who created a new genre of music for America. The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band, touring since 1976, has been called “a national treasure”, and has been enthusiastically embraced by audiences around the world.

This is CEC’s second fundraiser since the park’s completion in 2001.
Proceeds from the evening will support Solar One's green energy education and arts program and the ongoing beautification of Stuyvesant Cove Park. This programming serves as a way to draw the public to the park to learn about Solar One, its learning center, which also happens to be the only solar powered and environmentally friendly building of its kind in New York City. The environmental programs range from kindergarten to architects. Visitors enjoy the native plants, birds, and insects in the park while at the same time receiving critical lessons on environmental issues facing our city.

BACKGROUND:

“The LAST OF THE FIRST” was only JAZZ Documentary Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004, features The Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, a group of veteran jazz musicians, who embody the spirit and authenticity of early Swing Jazz. Director Anja Baron explains, “this filmic journey, which unfolds over the course of 4 years, crisscrossing continents and historical eras, accompanies these often legendary musicians from recording studio, concerts around the globe and teaching jazz at age 95, to hospital beds and funerals.”

Producer Al Vollmer intended this as his unique contribution to the legacy of jazz with a rare look at some of “the last of the first” and one of the longest running bands in the history of jazz. “The subjects of this documentary are veteran jazz musicians who started in the 1920's and 30's. With this documentary we pay tribute, give something back to these extraordinary musicians and preserve their music and their tales for generations to come before it is too late,” he emphatically stated.
