Gunnelpumpers
Spiritflake Music will release Gunnelpumpers' third album, Tritonium, on June 9, 2010. The CD features a complete set performed in front of a live audience at Chicago's Elbo Room on October 19, 2010. The CD was mixed by Rob Ruccia at Uptown Recording in Chicago and produced by bassist and bandleader Douglas Johnson.

The self-described “progressive, free improvisation" of the Chicago-based group is evident throughout Tritonium, which features only three tracks, including the nearly twenty-minute “McGroover". The other two titles are “Sir Cirrus" and “Eschatonus" the latter meaning “the sound at the end of the world."

The instrumentation on Tritonium is unusual, featuring two upright basses, bass guitar, electric guitar, hand percussion and drum kit. The musicians heard on Tritonium are all long-time fixtures of the Chicago-area independent and studio scenes, including a Chicago Symphony member.

The lineup heard on Tritonium consists of John Meyer (electric guitar), Douglas Johnson (Clevinger bass), Michael Hovnanian (double bass), Tom Mendel (bass guitar), Randy Farr (congas, percussion), and Bob Garrett (drum kit).

A CD release party and performance will take place at Gallery Cabaret, 2020 N. Oakley, Chicago, Illinois on June 9, 2012. In addition to Gunnelpumpers, Origin of Animal and Black Hole Trio will be performing at this event. Tritonium will become available as a digipak CD and digital download on June 9, 2012, through BandCamp, CDBaby, iTunes and other sites.

Gunnelpumpers's first two releases are “the nth wave" (May 2010) and Symphonie Improvisé (December 2010), both released on the independent Spiritflake Music label. Gunnelpumpers was formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 2002 by bassist Douglas Johnson and percussionist Randy Farr.

The term “gunnelpumping" refers to the act of standing on the rear gunnels of a canoe and propelling the craft forward by pumping one's legs.
