Guitarist Nels Cline's encyclopedic musical knowledge has resulted in a career that's as much marked by diversity as it is a distinctive approach that's inherent, whether it's in the context of noise improv with Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore, the acoustic Quartet Music or the alt-rock band Wilco.
His latest Cryptogramophone release, New Monastery: A View into the Music of Andrew Hill exemplifies his ability to place a heartfelt tribute in a context that honors the spirit, but not necessarily the letter, of the legendary pianist/composer's music.
AAJ Contributor Rex Butters sat down with Cline recently, to talk about New Monastery and more.
