DEPRIEST FAMILY JAZZ, a local nonprofit focused on bringing jazz to families in concert settings, is proud to present an evening with virtuoso jazz musician Greg Tardy.

Tardy is an exceptional saxophone, clarinet and flute player and has been playing and recording with the legendary Andrew Hill. He is touring in Europe with Hill's band this spring.

The concert is Saturday, May 27, 7:30p.m. at The University of Portland's Buckley Center Auditorium, at 5000 North Willamette Boulevard in North Portland. Tickets are available through TicketsWest.

Greg will play music from his recordings--Abundance, Hidden Light, Serendipity and The Truth. This concert is funded in part by a generous grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council. The evening will feature jazz with a rhythm section of Portland-based musicians, including Jof Lee on piano, Andre St.James on bass, Derek Sims on trumpet, and DePriest Family Jazz founder and music director Akbar DePriest on drums.

Tardy was born in New Orleans into a musical family. His mother, formerly a classical singer, is now a jazzvocalist. Tardy began studying classical clarinet and excelled in music through high school. At the prodding of his brother, Tardy explored the music of John Coltrane and was determined to become a jazz musician. His passion for the saxophone took him away from New Orleans, but he returned to play with and learn from many local and nationally known artists, including the Neville Brothers, Nicholas Payton, and Jason and Ellis Marsalis. Tardy moved to New York in 1992 to play with the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. Since moving to the Big Apple, he has performed and recorded with an array of musicians including Tom Harrell, Dave Douglas, Wynton Marsalis, Jay McShann, Steve Coleman, Betty Carter, James Moody, Bill Frisell, Rashied Ali, John Patitucci and many more. He has also played with notable saxophonists--Joe Lovano, Mark Turner, Chris Potter, Dewy Redman and Ravi Coltrane.

Tickets are available at all Safeway TicketsWest locations and at the door with an additional fee. For advance tickets, call (503) 224-TIXX or visit www.ticketswest.com. Tickets prices are $15 for general admission; $13 for seniors and students with ID; and young people 17 and under will be admitted FREE.
