20th annual jazz festival cool way to spend weekend in city
ASBURY PARK -- The 20th annual Asbury Park Jazz Festival, this year featuring trumpeter Tom Browne, keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith and vibraphonist Roy Ayers, will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Sunset Park.
Dreamed up by city employees and merchants 20 years ago, the early jazz festivals were among the city's few constants at a time when Asbury Park attracted few events outside of its night clubs and little money to make such festivals possible.
This year's free event, at which 20,000 are estimated to turn out over two days, comes as residents, city officials, businesses and developers are well into the city's restoration and rebirth with hundreds of millions of dollars invested.
Yet at least one aspect will not change, said Thomas Gilmour, the city's director of commerce.
