Dead.net And The Band's Facebook Page Will Retrace The Celebrated European Tour With Interactive Experiences And Premieres Of Exclusive Tracks From The Massive Europe '72 Boxed Set Due Out In September.

The Dead Will Also Reissue The Long Out-Of-Print Mono Mix Of Their 1967 Debut On 180-Gram Vinyl Exclusively For Record Store Day 2011.

LOS ANGELES—On April 7, 1972, Grateful Dead played the first of 22 European concerts and began an extraordinary run regarded by many to be the band's greatest. Today — on the anniversary of the historic tour's start—the group is launching different interactive features on Dead.net and the Dead's Facebook page that will give fans a seat on the bus and allow them to experience the European tour like never before.

Dead.net will feature an interactive map of the cities on the tour where fans can share memories and photos and compare notes about each show. The site will also preview songs from the forthcoming EUROPE '72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS boxed set by streaming a song from each show on the anniversary of each concert date beginning with “Ramble On Rose" from Wembley Empire Pool.

Fans can also follow the '72 tour on the Dead's Facebook page, which will be launching a widget that will be updated with new content for every tour stop, including a premiere of a track from each show, different from the tracks streaming on dead.net, beginning with “Playing In The Band" from Wembley Empire Pool. The widget will also be updated frequently with excerpts from the show-specific essays written for the upcoming boxed set, as well as rare and never-before-seen photos from the tour, set lists, and scans of memorabilia. The page will also host a sweepstakes that will award an “All The Music" edition of EUROPE '72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS to one lucky winner.

EUROPE '72: THE COMPLETE RECORDING features 70 hours of music on 72 discs and is due out in September. The massive collection was originally limited to 7,200 individually numbered sets housed in replica steamer trunks, but quickly sold out. Due to the overwhelming demand, the “All The Music" edition of the set (CDs without the deluxe packaging and coffee-table book) was announced and is now available for purchase on Dead.net for $450.

Jeffrey Norman, the primary mixer of the Dead's archival multi-track material for the past 15 years, is mixing each show from the original 16-track recordings, with the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools used to bring the master tapes back to life. Two-time Grammy®-winning engineer David Glasser is mastering the music to HDCD specs.

While going through the colossal task of transferring, backing up and restoring the Europe '72 multi-track recordings, engineers discovered several tracks that were not listed on any previously circulating track sheets or recordings. The latest findings are uncirculated versions of “Playing In The Band" and “Beat It On Down The Line" that were recorded in a studio during a TV taping on April 21, 1972 in Bremen, Germany. These and other newly uncovered recordings will be included in the EUROPE '72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS boxed set.

In other Dead news, the mono mix of the band's eponymous first album will be reissued on 180-gram vinyl exclusively for Record Store Day 2011. This is the first time in nearly 45 years that the mono mix has been made available. The album will be available exclusively at select independent music retailers on April 16 for a suggested list price of $24.98. For a list of participating stores, please visit recordstoreday.com.
