San Jose, Calif., — Hit Like A Girl: The Contest For Female Drummers today reported that video entries have been posted by female drummers from more than 30 different countries.

The contest is produced by DRUM! Magazine in conjunction with TRX Cymbals and Tom Tom Magazine. Girls and women of all ages are invited to submit videos of their drumming both to win valuable prizes and to support the global development of women drummers.

“Some of the most interesting entries highlight the diversity of talent entering the contest and the universality of music,” said Phil Hood, publisher and co-founder of DRUM!. “There are young girls who are just starting and some with years of experience. It's beautiful to see so many musicians who reflect different backgrounds and styles but share the love of drumming."

Darswa Plays Portnoy

One of this year's contestants is a young Indonesian girl, Fadilah Darswa, who entered after playing music for just one year. She has an infectious smile and a love for the music of Mike Portnoy. Once you see her, dressed traditionally and covering Paramore's “What Do You Get", you'll be a fan.

Building Black Crowes Backbeats

Another drummer, who goes by the handles “Little Drummer Girl" and “RockBandMom" is a 51-year old musician who took the leap to playing drums at age 47 after jamming with Rock Band for several months. In her cover of the Black Crowes “Hard To Handle," she demonstrates how far she's come in four years. During that stretch she joined a band—The Mydols, and even opened for the B-52s.

“Topsticks Swings Sheila E Meets Cindy Blackman

Yet another entrant, Nigerian drummer “Topsticks", plays in a jazzier more sophisticated style. She credits Sheila E and Cindy Blackman as major influences.

Vote Now! The Hit Like A Girl Contest runs until April 1, but March 15 is the last day drummers may upload their videos and enter. There are categories for Under 18 and 18 and Over drummers. Once the finalists are selected by fans, the winners will be chosen by a percussive panel of celebrity judges, including Gina Schock (The Go-Go’s), Elaine Bradley (Neon Trees), Jess Bowen (The Summer Set), Kim Thompson (Beyoncé) Shauney “Baby" Recke (Pussy Cat Dolls, Will.I.Am), Meytal Cohen (independent), Dawn Richardson (Four Non-Blondes, Tracy Chapman) and Hannah Ford (Prince, Bellevue Suite). The top three winners in each category will receive drum sets and other prizes.
