George Wein’s Newport All-Stars to Perform at Scullers Jazz Club on Saturday, July 21, at 8pm and 10pm

NEW YORK, NY: legendary impresario George Wein at the helm, the Newport All-Stars, featuring Lew Tabackin, Anat Cohen, Howard Alden, Jay Leonhart and Lewis Nash, will present an evening of swinging jazz at Scullers Jazz Club, 400 Soldiers Field Road, Boston, MA, on Saturday, July 21, at 8:00pm and 10:00pm.

George Wein is considered to be as much a legend as his festivals. He has spearheaded hundreds of music events annually since 1954 when he produced the first Newport Jazz Festival, an event that started the “festival era." Born in Boston, he became a jazz pianist in his youth, and while studying at Boston University led a group which played professionally around the area. He continues to perform around the world with his Newport All-Stars and is the Chairman of the Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc., which produces the world-renowned Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals in Rhode Island.

Demonstrating an astonishing virtuosity and originality as a leader, co-leader and versatile sideman, guitarist Howard Alden has performed or recorded with the likes of Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie and Scott Hamilton. He can be heard on the soundtrack to the 1999 Woody Allen movie “Sweet and Lowdown," for which he coached Sean Penn for his Academy Award-nominated role as a legendary jazz guitarist. Clarinetist Anat Cohen has been named the Jazz Journalists Association Clarinetist of the Year from 2007 through 2011 – the first time an artist has won such honors five years in a row. Incorporating everything from Classical to Argentine tango into her music, she is one of the leading voices of her generation.

Working in jazz and popular music, bassist Jay Leonhart has performed with diverse artists including Judy Garland, Carly Simon, Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Sinatra and Sting. Between 1975 and 1995, Leonhart was named The Most Valuable Bassist in the recording industry three times by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and has now recorded more than a dozen solo albums. A drummer of choice for an incredible array of artists – from the masters of the music to the hottest young players of today – Lewis Nash is equally in demand as a clinician and educator. While he continues to perform and record with a wide variety of artists, Nash leads several of his own exciting groups, from duo to septet. With his distinctive tenor sax style that includes abrupt changes of mood and a purposeful fervor, Lew Tabackin showcases the full range of possibilities of his instrument. In addition to the Newport All-Stars, Tabackin has performed with several top-notch bands, including the New York Jazz Giants, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra.

Tickets are $40.00 for the show or $82.00 for dinner and the show and are available at scullersjazz.com or by calling (617) 562-4111.
