We now have the DVD and CD available of this special evening celebrating Fred's 80th Birthday Bash at his Velvet this past March with many special guests!

Fred Anderson's 80th Birthday Bash, Live at the Velvet Lounge!

Delmark is very excited to present a very special document (DVD and CD) of the legendary Chicago Jazz “Avant Garde Father” Fred Anderson’s 80th Birthday party and live concert at Fred’s landmark near south side Chicago jazz club, The Velvet Lounge. Fred, we thank you for all that you do for the scene!

Beloved Chicago tenor sax legend and proprietor of the longest standing and most adventurous free-jazz club in Chicago, Fred Anderson celebrated his 80th (!) birthday in March and Delmark was fortunately there to capture this historic celebratory event! All 3 of Fred’s earlier Delmark albums were live at the Velvet but the excitement level here is unmatched and the show was sold out weeks in advance. Fred is joined by an unbelievably talented all-star group of modern jazz heavies, all bandleaders in their own right, including in demand guitar hero Jeff Parker (Tortoise) and former Chicagoan, NYC drummer Chad Taylor. (Marc Ribot, Chicago Underground, Iron & Wine)

We have a classic “tenor battle” from Mr. Anderson and New Orleans’ Edward “Kidd” Jordan (b. ’35)- two of the most underrated saxophonists. Kidd and Fred are long time friends and both very kind, generous, humble, & inspirational leaders/mentors/teachers to so many. An “Ode to Fielder” is a highlight from this night, and Kidd recently played a tribute concert for the ailing AACM founder/drummer legend, Alvin Fielder, (on Roscoe Mitchell’s SOUND, Delmark.) A DVD only bonus track is “Gone But Not Forgotten,” dedicated to Albert Ayler, and features master bassist Henry Grimes (b.’35), who recorded with Ayler and so many other legends. Welcome back, Henry!

Two iconic tenors, founding fathers of the free improvisation scenes in their respective cities of Chicago (Fred) and New Orleans (Kidd)…the 21st century renovation of a jazz tradition- exhilarating music is captured on this disc.
- Neil Tesser from the very informative liner notes.
