On Friday, September 17th, legendary trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith will return to Firehouse 12 for a two-set performance with his Golden Quartet. This special event, part of a five-city tour, will feature the world premiere of five new works from his “America" collection composed during his recent Guggenheim residency. Smith and the group will also be supporting his most recent recording, Spiritual Dimensions (Cuneiform Records), which documents his previous Firehouse 12 appearance in April 2009. The Golden Quartet line-up for this concert will feature pianist Angelica Sanchez, bassist John Lindberg and drummer Pheeroan akLaff.

Smith's long and storied career as an acclaimed musician, award-winning composer and revered educator spans the past 40 years. An integral part of New Haven's creative music scene in the mid-1970's, and longtime member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), he has appeared on more than 70 recordings, including 30 as a leader. His eclectic résumé includes collaborations with a long list of notable jazz figures, and he is currently a professor of music at the California Institute of the Arts, where he directs the MFA program in African American Improvisation.
