SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2009, NOON TO MIDNIGHT, DOWNTOWN ALBION

Join us for World Music Day, celebrating the first day of summer in 340 cities in 110 countries.

Anyone and everyone can participate. Amateurs, part-time professionals, and established artists of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Downtown sidewalks and parks will become impromptu musical stages, dance floors, and social meeting points. Amateur musicians, in every genre, will be able to play on the sidewalks for the biggest crowds of their lives. Professional musicians will be able to attract new audiences, who will come out from under their headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free.

“La Fete de la Musique" began in France 28 years ago and has spread across the globe. The one stipulation is that all performances are free (musicians are not paid; the audience does not pay). However, this year's Fete in Albion will serve as a “showcase" for musicians since we have invited representatives from all Michigan fairs and festivals, event planners, and many talent agents to come, thus providing you an opportunity to audition for other gigs! (See next page for other “paid” opportunities.)

France will be celebrating “50 years of French music” while Albion will commemorate Motown’s 50th anniversary and participate in “Playing For Change: Peace Through Music." For that, we ask that each performer do their own rendition of “Stand By Me" (a change from our original selections) which will be videotaped for the Internet. Because music is a universal language, we have also invited our Sister City in France (Noisy-le-Roi) and potential sister cities Godella (Valencia, Spain), and N'Dem (Senegal) to do the same.
